Overall Job Purpose:

Using the maritime knowledge and expertise gained from your seagoing years to effectively advise Members on all aspects of safety, technical and operational issues. You will work closely with a global network of marine surveyors, instructing them for attendance on Member vessels to evaluate the condition and operational status of a vessel and identify potential areas of P&I risk exposure. Support the Loss Prevention team in developing and delivering bespoke initiatives ranging from presentations, articles, and training seminars in support of our members and the maritime industry.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage vessel condition surveys, management assessments, navigation assessments and risk management reviews: Liaise with the underwriters, Members, brokers, and other appropriate bodies in regard to arranging surveys and assessments
  • Support the Condition Survey Coordinator in identifying and proposing to underwriters’ vessels to be considered for condition surveys
  • Support the Condition Survey Coordinator in identifying, selecting, and instructing competent, suitably experienced, and reliable surveyors and consultants to undertake surveys, assessments, and reviews as required
  • Review and interpret condition survey, management, and navigation assessment reports to identify potential P&I risks and exposures, making recommendations to the Head of Loss Prevention
  • Record details of surveys, assessments, and reviews in the Company’s computer system, maintain files of correspondence and documentation
  • Monitor and review survey and assessment files to ensure appropriate follow up action is implemented where appropriate
  • Provide monthly updates to the IG-Secretariat of condition surveys undertaken
  • Identify and recommend vessels to be considered for programmed condition surveys
  • Review data published by Port State Control regimes, Classification Societies, and other maritime authorities to identify entered vessels which may have been detained, blacklisted or for which classification may have been suspended or withdrawn
  • Identify pertinent topics for loss prevention articles, guidance notes and posters, develop and author material for publication
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to internal and external stakeholders as requested / required
  • Deliver technical presentations to Club Members, Industry bodies and other parties as required
  • Undertake root cause assessments of large claims and document findings
  • Undertake such other loss prevention related tasks as may be directed by the Head of the Loss Prevention Department

Person specification:

  • Qualified and experienced Senior Deck Officer (STCW II/2) (with substantial experience as senior officer on ocean going tankers)
  • Knowledge and operational understanding of different vessel types such as bulk carrier, container, and cruise
  • Possess an in-depth knowledge and understanding of maritime regulatory requirements including IMO Conventions, Codes and IACS Rules
  • Previous shore-based experience essential, seafarer seeking to transition ashore may be considered but must demonstrate a desire to build a long-term career on shore
  • Highly organised, self-motivated, strong problem-solving skills and excellent attention to detail
  • A team player with the ability to work effectively with people at all levels
  • Excellent written English skills such as to produce high quality and engaging technical articles and publications
  • Good presentation skills and comfortable speaking in public
  • Willingness to undertake occasional travel as may be required
  • Professional registration preferred with an interest in continued knowledge development and future regulation implementation
