The Marine Electrotechnology programme at CyMA aims in educating individuals into becoming Electro Technical Officers (ETO) on commercial ships, based on the standards of the STCW International Convention (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers).

Upon completion of the 4 years of study, which also includes one year training on board, the graduates will obtain the Certificate of Competency for Electrotechnical Officer.

Most modern ships are controlled or monitored by electronic systems, automation and computers, therefore experienced and highly skilled technicians are needed for their operation and proper maintenance.

The ETO is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all electrical and electronic equipment, installations and machinery. This also includes radiocommunications and electronic navigation aids.

General Objectives

  1. Prepare students to become successful professional electro-technical officers in the demanding field of marine electro-technology;
  2. Provide graduates the necessary knowledge and technical skills to excel in the marine electro-technology industry as electro-technical officers (ETO);
  3. Provide students with the fundamental principles of electrical science and technology in order to cope successfully with the technological challenges of the marine electro-technology industry;
  4. Cultivate analytical skills, problem solving tactics, and critical thinking;
  5. Promote ethics, job responsibility, leadership and teamwork, and moral practices;
  6. Carry out safely the electro-technical officer duties;
  7. Promote life-long learning and continuous education through electro-technical training and advanced degrees;
  8. Cover the minimum International Maritime Organization (IMO) standard of competence for officer in charge of an electro-technical officer (STCW 2010 Convention Chapter III, Section AIII/6. IMO model course 7.08 Functions 1, 2,& 3)
  9. Develop skills for effective communication with co-workers, shipping experts, and the public on topics related to technical concepts, risks, and recommendations.

Specific Objectives

  1. Equip students with fundamental knowledge, analytical skills, electrical and technological tools, simulator and laboratory experience in order to cope successfully in the challenging field of marine electro-technology;
  2. Facilitate learning and training in the field of marine electro-technology which are directly linked to industry and current state-of-the-art technology;
  3. Provide the theoretical and computational skills necessary for the solution of both theoretical and practical electrical and technological problems in the field of marine electro-technology;
  4. Provide practical and experimental hands-on and one year on-board experience that allows the students to link directly to fundamental knowledge and theory;
  5. Prepare students to work alone or in groups in order to provide electro-technological solutions;
  6. Prepare students to design/implement systems and processes towards the solution of marine electro-technology problems;
  7. Develop communications skills including the abilities to write technical reports;
  8. Provide students the opportunity to develop specialized knowledge and technical competence in their field of expertise in order to become successful professional electro-technology officers;
  9. Obtain certain knowledge related to: Electrical, Electronic and Control Engineering; Maintenance and Repair; Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care of Persons on Board, all at the Operational level based on the IMO STCW (Standards of Trainings, Certifications and Watchkeeping) competency.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, the students are expected to:

  1. Have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the processes and technologies involved in the field of marine electro-technology;
  2. Use mathematics, industrial chemistry, and basic engineering techniques to analyze and solve problems related to marine electro-technology;
  3. Train on electric, high-voltage, fault detection, technical and digital systems and machines for specialized marine electro-technology functions;
  4. Learn definitions and specialized terminology of technical maritime English;
  5. Use electrical drawing knowledge and tools to design electric circuits, electrical equipment, measurement sensors and electric measuring devices;
  6. Have in-depth knowledge of electrical, electronic and control systems of deck machinery and cargo-handling equipment;
  7. Have experience and high skills in electronic systems, automatizations and computers for their proper operation and maintenance.
  8. Be responsible for maintenance and repair of all electrical and electronic equipment, installations and machinery, which includes radio-communications and electronic navigation aids;
  9. Learn to use the electronic engine Simulator and familiarize with the concepts of sensors, electric power systems, analogue electronics, internal-external communication systems and electric systems of hotel equipment;
  10. Use the bridge simulator and the bridge navigation equipment;
  11. Have broad knowledge of electro hydraulic – electro pneumatic systems and auxiliary machinery of ships;
  12. Communicate effectively with others using oral or written skills;
  13. Know the importance and benefits of life-long learning in the electro-technical profession.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements

The general admission requirements for entry to an undergraduate program of study is a High School Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification with an average grade of ‘15 out of 20′ (75%) or its equivalent. Also, for the Nautical Science, Marine Engineering and Marine Electro-technology, students are requested to have an average of 15/20 with concentration in Mathematics and/or Physics.

In addition to a strong academic record, we take into account the student’s involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership skills, and other relevant background information

Proficiency in the English Language: students should present at least a TOEFL score of 550 paper-based or 213 computer-based, or GCSE “O” Level with “C” or IELTS with a score of 5.5 or score placement at the ENGL-100 level of the University of Nicosia Placement Test.


All future cadets admitting for the CyMA programs, need to undergo the Medical Fitness Certificate for Seafarers, which is based as per the STCW I/9 Regulation.
